Farmington is located in the high San Juan Plateau, along the San Juan River near the Four Corners at the edge of the large Navajo reservation that spreads west into Arizona. The town itself is fairly plain, but areas to the north and east into Durango, CO, the Colorado San Juan Mountains, Mesa Verde National Park and the Santa Fe National Forest offer excellent mountain recreation.

Aztec (Navajo: Kinteel) is a city and county seat of San Juan County, New Mexico.

The City of Aztec has 10 parks for an approximate total of 132 acres. Aztec also manages the Aztec Arches and the Alien Run Mountain Bike Trail.

Located within the city limits of Aztec, the Aztec Ruins National Monument is a UNESCO World Heritage site managed by the National Park Service. Visitors are allowed to take a self-guided tour through the ruins of the main roomblock and restored Great Kiva. The Ruins also offers special events and tours throughout the year.

Bloomfield (Navajo: Naabiʼání) is a city in northeastern San Juan County, New Mexico.

The Salmon Ruins pueblo and museum are located just to the west of the city along Highway 64. The ruins are the remains of a 12th-century Anasazi village. The ruins, as well as the homestead of George Salmon are open to the public.

Other nearby attractions include the Aztec Ruins, about 15 miles to the north in the town of Aztec, and the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, approximately 50 miles to the south.
